Classical Indian Dance Workshop
Asa is a classical Indian dancer from the United Kingdom. He has been training in Kathak, the classical dance form from northern India since 2008 initially under the tutelage of Anuradha Chaturvedi at Drishti Dance UK and more recently under the guidance of Sujata Banerjee in London. He has been training in Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form originally from Tamil Nadu, south India, since 2011 under the tutelage of Ananya Chatterjee at Kalakunj, Reading and more recently under the guidance of Nina Rajarani at Srishti in London. He has also studied Bharatanatyam at Kalamandalam Kolkata, India under Dr. Thankamani Kutty. He has performed across the UK as well as in Luxembourg and Lucknow, India. Indian classical dance is one of the oldest known forms of dance in the world and is seen as a form of worship. According to Hindu tradition Bharatanatyam is the dance used by Lord Shiva to create the world and it can be directly traced to the ancient temple carvings of south India. Kathak brings together the history of Hindu and Muslim India having been adopted and adapted by the Nawabs of Lucknow. It brings with it the grace, formality and poise of Lucknowi culture. Asa will be teaching a workshop in Bharatanatyam that will cover the history of the dance, the basic postures and footwork and a small excerpt from a classical piece accompanied by Carnatic classical music. We will also look at the meaning of hand gestures and how these are used to tell a story. Workshop offered in: ENGLISH
